Our Team

Hi! We are a group of students in year 8 from the Sydney Conservatorium High School. MecoMask is a school creativity project that we were able to do for a term. Our aim was to design and make eco-friendly and comfortable masks in all sizes for anyone to use!

1.6 Billion face masks entered the ocean in 2020

Although single use face masks have assisted us through the pandemic, the environmental impact of using these masks is proving to be more severe than we originally realised. Single use face masks take an extremely long time to naturally degrade, and pollute our oceans. Even reusable cotton masks are not environmentally conscious as cotton requires a large amount of water to produce.

Why Switch to Bamboo?

Bamboo is easy to grow and has a very low impact on the environment. There is a large source of bamboo, and unlike cotton, it doesn't require an excessive amount of water. It doesn't need a large amount of pesticides or fertilizers, and it is ethically produced. Unlike single use masks, our bamboo masks can easily degrade.

Why use recycled cotton?

Cotton is a fabric used to make all sorts of clothing all around the world. However, cotton needs a lot of water to grow - to grow 1kg of cotton, you need 10,000 L!

Recycling cotton prevents textile waste and requires much less resources than growing it would, making it sustainable.
